This now industry-standard file format captures all of the various layers and passes of information at very high numeric resolution in one file. The real secret here is the “MultiLayer” format (which is distinct from “OpenEXR” even though the file format being used is OpenEXR… go figure). And I can’t for the life of me understand why it’s so useful to have a black-and-white “depth map” output when the Multilayer file-format can simply include the actual floating-point map data right there in your file.īlender is changing extraordinarily quickly now, such that a great many of the techniques which are discussed in then-current tutorials of just a couple years ago are now obsolete. The “nodes” system renders all such things completely obsolete, IMHO. Well, considering that this thread was started in 2006, it’s pretty darned out-of-date by now.
